Our Food Access Programs provide emergency relief and long-term nourishment to Bronx families through culturally relevant meals, pantry services, and wellness supports.
Program Overview
Food insecurity is one of the most urgent and persistent challenges facing Bronx families. Nearly 39% of adults in the borough report experiencing food insecurity – the highest rate in New York City. For Latino and Black households, this issue is compounded by long-standing structural inequities that limit access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally relevant food.
Phipps Neighborhoods is responding to this crisis with a bold, community-rooted solution. Through a growing network of food pantries, satellite sites, and community refrigerators, we deliver emergency meals and wraparound services to approximately 1,000 households each year, distributing over 248,000 meals since 2020.
But this work goes beyond hunger relief. Our Food Access Programs are designed to empower families with connections to nutrition education, public benefits, and long-term stability.
Support
We distribute meal kits weekly, with enough food to sustain a family of four for up to three days.
Nourish
We prioritize food quality and cultural relevance, offering fresh produce and proteins to South Bronx families.
Empower
Pantry clients are connected to SNAP enrollment, financial coaching, and workforce programs, integrating food access with economic mobility.
Program Components
- Emergency Pantry Bags: Weekly meal kits from our Melrose and West Farms centers.
- Nutrition Workshops: Cooking demonstrations and healthy eating education.
- Wraparound Services: On-site case management and resource referrals.
- Volunteer Engagement: Local and corporate partners support packing and outreach.
- Infrastructure Investments: Cold storage enables better food variety and efficiency.
- Strategic Outreach: Flyers, rent statement inserts, and tenant meetings build awareness.
Impact & Growth Goals
248,000+ meals have been distributed since 2020, reaching families across eight Bronx Council Districts. With a team that is 85% Bronx-based, we’re proud to deliver this work with trust and cultural insight.
Looking ahead, we aim to:
- Expand our Thanksgiving meal program to 500 households annually
- Increase year-round pantry capacity to serve more families
- Deepen partnerships to improve the quality and cultural relevance of food
- Secure sustainable funding to maintain and grow this essential work
